Sculpting With Clay

Did you know working with clay is good for your hands? It keeps them nimble and strong. I am not going to give you any scientific evidence, I just know it is true. It is good exercise for your hands and your mind. Sculpting a face in clay will make you a better portrait painter because it gives you a deeper understanding of the face in the round. I think the same is true the other way around.  This year would be great time to try something new, find that creative person within yourself. Much of art is problem solving and it is not only good for the mind but the spirit. Two weeks ago I ordered 50 lbs of clay. It has been way too long since I have squished that wonderful stuff in my fingers. If you haven’t tried it yet, you will have that opportunity in March.

Having art classes in 2020 has been sketchy, but we are looking forward to a variety of classes and workshops for this new year.  Oil painting for beginner and intermediate painters begins on Tuesday the 16th here at Coffman ArtWorks Gallery. We have three openings for that class and are keeping classes are small right now. In Beginning Sculpture class, starts March 1st and continuing each Monday evening in March from 6-8pm we will learn to build an armature and clay figure, using non-toxic air drying clay. We will learn to see, design and build 3 dimensional forms by hand. We have four opening available. Watercolor classes and a teen painting class have been going on for the last couple of months and have been really rewarding. I will fill you in on the rest later.

Go make something with your hands this week while it is too cold to be outside.  For questions or to sign up for one of our classes, go to our contact page and let us know.
